Juice Lab

Make your game feel amazing

Game feel, or "juice", is the small stuff that makes a hit punch, a chest pop and a jump feel great. Pick a recipe, switch the steps on one by one, and watch a boring moment turn juicy. Every step comes with how it works and a few lines of code.

Same slime, same jump. Left: plain. Right: squash, stretch, dust and a shadow.

How to make it juicy

Each recipe starts plain. Switch the steps on in order and feel the difference. Slow motion shows exactly what happens frame by frame.

Tip: screen shake and flashes can make some players sick. Always add a setting to turn them down or off.

    Animation basics

Six rules that make anything move better

These come from classic cartoon animation and work the same in a pixel game, a 3D game or a menu button.

    Squash & stretch

Stretch things when they move fast, squash them when they hit. Keep the volume the same: wider means shorter.

    Anticipation

Before a big move, go a little the other way. A crouch before a jump tells the player what is coming.

    Follow-through

Loose parts (hair, capes, ears, antennas) keep moving after the body stops, then settle.

    Easing

Nothing in real life starts or stops instantly. Ease out for things that arrive, overshoot for things that feel playful.

    Timing

Fewer frames feel snappy, more frames feel heavy or floaty. Hold the key poses a little longer than you think.

    Exaggeration

Push it further than real life. In a small game sprite, a subtle move is an invisible move.

    Feel the curve

Pick a curve and a speed. The graph shows how far the object is at each moment, and the code is ready to copy.
